Sunset over the Kananaskis River

The name Kananaskis is a corruption of the name “kin-e-ah-kis”.  There is a legend about Kin-e-ah-kis, a Cree Native American, who is said to have recovered from a blow from an axe which had stunned him, but didn’t kill him. The Irish born explorer, John Palliser named the Kananaskis River and valley after this person.
